  Douglas Burden has been the Bass Trombonist of the National Arts Centre Orchestra since 1972. He has taught at the University of Ottawa since 1975 and continues to do so. He was the bass trombone instructor at the McGill Faculty of Music in Montréal for six years from 2001 to 2007. For a period of five years from 1987 to 1992, he travelled weekly to Kingston and taught at Queen's University. He was also a member of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra for seventeen years from 1975 to1992.

  After playing the cornet, trumpet, and tenor trombone for seven years, he received his early formal instruction on the bass trombone as a high school student at the Hamilton Conservatory of Music under the guidance of Antal Dvorak. Upon receiving a scholarship to the Eastman School of Music, he continued his studies in Rochester New York under the famous trombone teacher Emory Remington and later with Donald Knaub, graduating in 1975 with a Bachelor of Music degree in Performance "suma cum laude".

  In 1979 Mr. Burden received a grant from the Canada Council to continue studies with Arnold Jacobs and Edward Kleinhammer, both members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

  As an active member of the musical life of Ottawa, Mr. Burden has performed solo Bass Trombone Recitals for the CBC, solo and chamber music recitals at the University of Ottawa, was a member of the Ottawa Brass Quintet, and was the manager and co-founder of "Classical Brass", a ten-piece brass ensemble.  Currently he is the bass trombonist of Capital BrassWorks. Mr. Burden has performed as soloist and chamber musician in the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival on many occasions, Music and Beyond Festival, as well as the Elora Festival. One of Mr. Burden's former students is now the principal trombonist of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and another is the second trombonist of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. Many other students have gone on to successful careers as music educators and military band musicians.

  Mr. Burden has been on the trombone faculty of the Domaine Forget Brass Academy in 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, and 2013 as an Instructor of private lessons, coaching orchestral excerpts for low brass, and conducting the Brass Choir and Trombone Choir.

  As an adjudicator Mr. Burden has adjudicated the Kiwanis Music Festival in Ottawa and MusicFest Canada.

  Mr. Burden has conducted Masterclasses throughout Canada and the world. Some of the highlights are at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, British Columbia; University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta; McGill University in Montreal, Quebec; Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland; Three Oaks Secondary School in Summerside, Prince Edward Island; Beijing Conservatory of Music in Beijing, China; Nottingham Great Britain, and The Royal Danish Academy of Music, Copenhagen, Denmark.

  As a freelance musician Mr. Burden has performed and recorded with L’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal under Charles Dutoit, The Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, The National Ballet Orchestra, and in the pit orchestras for Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera among many others. Other freelance work has included playing in the backup orchestras for singers and entertainers such as Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Holly Cole, and Rich Little.

  Douglas is the bass trombonist with Capital BrassWorks and can be heard on all four CDs that they have recorded.

  Mr. Burden is a Thein Artist in Canada and can be heard on recordings of the National Arts Centre Orchestra on the RCA, Analekta, and CBC labels and on the London Decca label with L’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal. He is in demand across North America as a soloist, conductor, adjudicator, and clinician.

  Douglas enjoys spending time with his family. He enjoys reading a wide range of books that span from Alice Munro, Margaret Atwood, through Patrick O’Brien, to C.S. Forester, Barbara W. Tuchman, Winston Churchill, and Margaret MacMillan. He is a keen student of military history particularly WWI and WWII. During the summer months he enjoys touring on his Honda Goldwing and playing golf. During the winter months, when time allows, he enjoys watching movies both new and classics. Douglas is a big sports fan and follows the NFL, in particular the New England Patriots; as well as the NHL Ottawa Senators.

  Douglas enjoys teaching and keeping in touch with his former students.

  Trombone basse de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts depuis 1972, Douglas Burden enseigne à l’Université d’Ottawa depuis 1975. Il a fait partie du corps professoral de l’École de musique de l’Université McGill de 2001 à 2007 et, pendant cinq ans, s’est déplacé chaque semaine à Kingston pour donner des cours à l’Université Queen’s (1987–1992). Il a également été membre de l’Orchestre symphonique d’Ottawa pendant 17 ans (1975–1992).

Il a donné des récitals de trombone basse à Radio-Canada et à l’Université d’Ottawa, où on a aussi pu le voir comme chambriste; a fait partie de l’Ottawa Brass Quintet; et été directeur et cofondateur de Classical Brass, un ensemble de dix cuivres. Actuellement trombone basse de l’ensemble Capital BrassWorks, il s’est produit à maintes reprises, en solo et comme chambriste, au Festival de musique de chambre d’Ottawa et au Festival d’Elora.

  Doug Burden a enseigné à l’Académie de cuivres du Domaine Forget (2007–2008, 2011–2013); il y a offert des leçons particulières, mené les répétitions de pièces orchestrales pour cuivres basses et dirigé les ensembles de cuivres et de trombones.

  Juge au Festival Kiwanis à Ottawa et à MusicFest Canada, il a animé des classes de maître aux quatre coins du pays et du monde, y compris à l’Université de Colombie-Britannique (Vancouver), à l’Université de l’Alberta (Edmonton), à l’Université de Montréal, à la Memorial University of Newfoundland (St. John’s), à l’école secondaire Three Oaks (Summerside, I.-P.-É.), au Conservatoire de musique de Beijing, à Nottingham (R.-U.) et à l’Académie royale de musique du Danemark (Copenhague).

  L’un de ses anciens élèves est aujourd’hui trombone solo de l’Orchestre symphonique de Pittsburgh et un autre est second trombone de l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. Plusieurs de ses élèves poursuivent également de brillantes carrières d’éducateurs musicaux ou d’instrumentistes dans des harmonies militaires.

  À titre de musicien indépendant, Burden s’est produit avec l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal sous la baguette de Charles Dutoit, l’Orchestre philharmonique de Hamilton et l’Orchestre du Ballet national, ensembles avec lesquels il a réalisé des enregistrements. Il a été de l’orchestre accompagnant des productions des Misérables et du Fantôme de l’opéra, entre autres, et a partagé la scène avec des chanteurs et artistes tels Frank Sinatra, Tom Jones, Holly Cole et Rich Little.

  Sollicité partout en Amérique du Nord comme soliste, chef d’orchestre, membre de jury et enseignant, Douglas Burden aime les moments passés en famille. Lecteur assidu, ses auteurs favoris vont d’Alice Munro à Margaret Atwood en passant par Patrick O’Brien, C. S. Forester, Barbara W. Tuchman, Winston Churchill et Margaret MacMillan. Il se passionne pour l’histoire militaire, en particulier pour les deux Guerres mondiales. L’été, il se plaît à faire des randonnées à moto sur sa Honda Goldwing et à jouer au golf. En hiver, quand son emploi du temps le lui permet, il aime regarder des films, récents ou classiques. Amateur de sports, il suit assidûment les activités de la NFL, en particulier des Patriots de la Nouvelle-Angleterre, ainsi que celles des Sénateurs d’Ottawa dans la LNH.

  Conductor Emeritus Pinchas Zukerman

  Pinchas Zukerman has remained a phenomenon in the world of music for over four decades. His musical genius, prodigious technique and unwavering artistic standards are a marvel to audiences and critics. Devoted to the next generation of musicians, he has inspired younger artists with his magnetism and passion. His enthusiasm for teaching has resulted in innovative programs in London, New York, China, Israel and Ottawa. The name Pinchas Zukerman is equally respected as violinist, violist, conductor, pedagogue and chamber musician.

  Pinchas Zukerman's 2016-2017 season, his eighth as Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London and his second as Artist-in-Association with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, includes over 100 concerts worldwide.  In January 2017, he serves as Artistic Director of the Winter Festival for three weeks of concerts and educational residency activities with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra.  Guest conducting and soloist engagements include the Cleveland Orchestra and Boston, Pittsburgh and Montreal Symphonies, plus overseas appearances with the Berlin and Israel Philharmonics, Camerata Salzburg, Sydney Symphony, Korean Chamber Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra and Miyazaki Festival Orchestra.  European recitals with pianist Yefim Bronfman and chamber concerts with the Zukerman Trio round out the season.

  Over the last decade, Pinchas Zukerman has become as equally regarded a conductor as he is an instrumentalist, leading many of the world's top ensembles in a wide variety of the orchestral repertoire's most demanding works.  A devoted and innovative pedagogue, Mr. Zukerman chairs the Pinchas Zukerman Performance Program at the Manhattan School of Music, where he has pioneered the use of distance-learning technology in the arts. In Canada, where he served as Music Director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra from 1999-2015, he established the NAC Institute for Orchestra Studies and the Summer Music Institute encompassing the Young Artists, Conductors and Composers Programs.  He currently serves as Conductor Emeritus of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, as well as Artistic Director of its Young Artists' Program. 

  Born in Tel Aviv in 1948, Pinchas Zukerman came to America in 1962 where he studied at The Juilliard School with Ivan Galamian. He has been awarded the Medal of Arts, the Isaac Stern Award for Artistic Excellence and was appointed as the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative's first instrumentalist mentor in the music discipline.  Pinchas Zukerman's extensive discography contains over 100 titles, and has earned him 2 Grammy awards and 21 nominations.  Recent releases include Brahms’s Symphony No. 4 and Double Concerto with the National Arts Centre Orchestra and cellist Amanda Forsyth, recorded in live performances at Ottawa’s Southam Hall, and an album of works by Elgar and Vaughan Williams with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

  Pinchas Zukerman fait sensation sur la scène musicale depuis plus de 40 ans. Sa musicalité hors du commun, sa technique prodigieuse et ses hautes exigences artistiques ne cessent d’émerveiller les auditoires et la critique. Ayant à cœur la prochaine génération de musiciens, il inspire les jeunes artistes par son magnétisme et sa passion. Violoniste, altiste, chef d’orchestre et chambriste renommé, de même que pédagogue dévoué et avant-gardiste, il a institué des programmes novateurs à Londres, à New York, en Chine, en Israël et à Ottawa.

  Plus de 100 concerts, un peu partout au monde, sont au programme de Pinchas Zukerman pour la saison 2016-2017, sa huitième comme premier chef invité de l’Orchestre philharmonique royal de Londres et sa deuxième comme artiste associé de l’Orchestre symphonique d’Adelaide. En janvier 2017, le chef instrumentiste offrira trois semaines de concerts et d’activités éducatives avec l’Orchestre symphonique du New Jersey dans le cadre d’un programme de résidence, à titre de directeur artistique du Winter Festival.   Depuis plusieurs décennies, Pinchas Zukerman est reconnu tout autant comme chef d’orchestre que comme instrumentiste, dirigeant bon nombre des plus prestigieux ensembles de la planète dans un répertoire orchestral à la fois vaste et des plus exigeants. Il chapeaute en outre le Pinchas Zukerman Performance Program à la Manhattan School of Music, où il a fait œuvre de pionnier dans l’application des techniques de téléapprentissage au domaine des arts. Au Canada, il a occupé de 1999 à 2015 le poste de directeur musical de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts, où il a mis sur pied l’Institut de musique orchestrale et l’Institut estival de musique, ce dernier regroupant trois programmes destinés respectivement aux jeunes artistes, aux chefs d’orchestre et aux compositeurs. Il est actuellement chef d’orchestre émérite de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts et directeur artistique du Programme des jeunes artistes du Centre.

  Viola David Thies-Thompson

  David was born in Kenya where his father served as a missionary doctor. When David was 5 years old his family moved back to Canada and settled in Victoria, BC. David began violin lessons at the age of 7, first by Suzuki method, and later at the Victoria Conservatory of Music (VCM) with Sydney Humphreys. He received diplomas from the VCM and the Royal Conservatory of Music.

  Focused on orchestral playing, David particularly enjoyed his studies at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada, McGill University, and the Eastman School of Music. His teachers have included Mauricio Fuks and Stuart Knussen for orchestral coaching.

  His professional orchestral life began at the age of 15 as a violinist with the Victoria Symphony. After a brief hiatus for more schooling, he joined Symphony Nova Scotia in 1988. In 1990, David left Halifax for Ottawa to take a position in the National Arts Centre Orchestra (NACO) as a violinist. After 18 years in the NACO’s violin section, David looked for a new musical challenge and thus, in 2008, he changed instruments and joined the viola section. In addition to his current position in the NACO, David has also appeared as a guest musician with other orchestras and chamber ensembles including the Winnipeg Symphony, the Gryphon Trio, and the Berlin Philharmonic. 

  David has performed as concertmaster with Thirteen Strings, the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, and the Opera Lyra Ottawa Orchestra. He frequently appears on the National Arts Centre’s 'Music for a Sunday Afternoon' series, and at the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival, the Music and Beyond Festival, and more recently the Festival aux iles du Bic.

  David also enjoys conducting. He served as Music Director of the Ottawa Chamber Orchestra from 1999 to 2013 and now conducts the NACO Players Association Fanfair concert. He is also a key coordinator for the annual fundraising campaign for The Ottawa FoodBank and the Snowsuit Fund.  

  David is an active member of Christ Church Cathedral Ottawa, where he is now the Artistic Director of the Cathedral’s eclectic, multi-disciplinary Cathedral Arts program. David enjoys an active teaching studio, gardening, and spending time with his family.

  David Thies-Thompson est né au Kenya, où son père était médecin missionnaire. Il avait cinq ans quand sa famille est arrivée au Canada, où elle s’est installée à Victoria (C.-B.).   Il a amorcé sa carrière de musicien d’orchestre à 15 ans comme violoniste au sein de l’Orchestre symphonique de Victoria. Après une pause pour poursuivre ses études,  il a joint les rangs du Symphony Nova Scotia en 1988. En 1990, il a quitté Halifax pour s’établir à Ottawa où il est entré comme violoniste à l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts. Après 18 années passées dans la section des violons, il a voulu relever un nouveau défi musical. C’est ainsi qu’en 2008, il s’est joint à la section des altos. En plus de son poste actuel à l’Orchestre du CNA, David s’est produit comme musicien invité avec divers orchestres et ensembles de musique de chambre dont l’Orchestre symphonique de Winnipeg, le Trio Gryphon et l’Orchestre philharmonique de Berlin.  

  Il a par ailleurs tenu le rôle de violon solo avec l’ensemble Thirteen Strings, à l’Orchestre symphonique d’Ottawa et à l’orchestre d’Opéra Lyra Ottawa. Il collabore souvent à la série Musique pour un dimanche après-midi de l’Orchestre du CNA, au Chamberfest d’Ottawa et au festival Musique et autres mondes, et il s’est produit récemment aux Concerts aux îles du Bic.

  David a une autre corde à son… archet : la direction. Il a été directeur musical de l’Ottawa Chamber Orchestra de 1999 à 2013, et c’est lui qui dirige maintenant le concert de la Fanfoire de l’Association des musiciens de l’Orchestre du CNA. Il est aussi un coordonnateur clé de la campagne annuelle de financement de la Banque d’alimentation d’Ottawa et du Fonds Habineige.

    

  Il participe activement aux activités de la cathédrale Christ Church d’Ottawa, qui a un éclectique programme d’art multidisciplinaire dont il assure la direction artistique. David fait beaucoup d’enseignement et s’adonne au jardinage. Il affectionne les moments passés en famille.
