Anticipating the Unknown

To me dance is communication without words. However, I don't attend a performance expecting to understand everything. In fact, I rarely read the program notes prior to a dance show. Instead, I prefer to settle into my seat with an open mind enjoying the anticipation of the unknown.

After the performance I like to see if my interpretation had anything to do with the program description. Sometimes it is completely different than the choreographer's intention and other times I was on the exact the same path. I have left dance performances puzzled, frustrated and elated; but I always leave with something - a visual memory, sound or feeling that shifts my perspective.

Tonight the 2012 Canada Dance Festival opens with a performance by Aszure Barton & Artists at the NAC and I can't wait to add to my brain's memory bank.
