Wagner’s imagination was powerfully stirred by the poetry of Mathilde Wesendonck, his erstwhile muse and lover. Glowing with passion his settings are radiantly realized by mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung. Her performance of the cycle drew accolades from The New York Times, calling her voice “plush, dark-hued…captivating,” and saying that it “soared during the restless, romantic effusions.”
Maestro Pinchas Zukerman also conducts Brahms’s powerful last symphony—the pinnacle of his orchestral output.
