Earth Hour at the National Arts Centre

The National Arts Centre (NAC) will join millions of citizens around the world in support of the environment during Earth Hour on Saturday March 19, 2016.

From 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., the NAC will switch off all non-essential lighting and ventilation. Staff will be reminded to turn off their computers and desk lamps before they leave for the weekend. As for patrons of the NAC’s le café restaurant, they will be able to dine by candlelight on Saturday evening.

It should be noted that lights will stay on in certain areas (e.g. interior and exterior walkways) to ensure the safety of patrons and staff. Lighting and ventilation in rooms where there is a scheduled performance or function will remain lit.

This is the eighth consecutive year the NAC has participated in Earth Hour.

Earth Hour is a global climate change initiative. Individuals, businesses, governments and communities are invited to turn out their lights for one hour. The event began in Sydney Australia in 2007, when two million people switched off their lights. In 2015, hundreds of millions of people in 7,000 cities in 162 countries and territories participated. In 2016, Earth Hour aims to be even bigger.
