MATINEES TO BE CANCELLED OR MOVED AS OF JANUARY 2016

November 23, 2015 – OTTAWA (Canada) – The National Arts Centre (NAC) announced today that it will begin renovations of its 46 year-old building in December 2015, earlier than originally anticipated. The impacts of this shift are being felt across the entire organization, specifically resulting in the moving or cancellation of daytime performances, including student matinees.

Construction work commencing in January will take place weekdays between midnight and 2 p.m. This will allow evening and weekend performances to go ahead as planned. Unfortunately, from January to June 2016, daytime performances taking place during the week will be cancelled(*), shifted to other halls within the NAC, or relocated to other venues across the city.

The NAC sincerely regrets the trouble and, in many cases, the disappointment caused by the earlier construction work. We recognize the commitment Educators have made individually to make these educational activities possible for students.

The NAC remains committed to providing exciting educational opportunities for students to engage with the arts and the Arts Centre. One of the highlights of the renovations is the addition of a new, dedicated education space to host a wide range of education related activities. It is our hope that Educators will continue to be involved with the National Arts Centre during and following renovations, and that together we can foster engagement with the arts for the coming generations of Canadians.

Attached is a list of shows that have been affected by this situation, as well as relevant contacts for each artistic discipline.

(*) The NAC will reimburse schools that have already paid for matinees that have been cancelled. If one or more of your shows have been cancelled, your reservations and any payments made will be cancelled automatically.  For credit card payments, the refund will be posted in the next 7 – 10 business days.  If you have paid by cheque, NAC representatives will contact you shortly to make the necessary arrangements.
