That is the premise of Album de finissants, an original work by Anne Sophie Rouleau – assisted by Michelle Parent – that is inspired by the scathing texts of Mathieu Arsenault. The piece moves beyond the ordinary perceptions of adolescence to reveal the unexpressed inner life throbbing under the surface.

Onstage are some twenty high school students. Pinned to their desks, they choreograph their daily routine: hands raised, chairs pulled out, pencils sharpened, giving rhythmic expression to a script performed by five actors, a veritable volcanic magma chamber. Under the lithosphere of frozen smiles and proper attire lies a world of feverish frenzy: unrelenting desire, sources of anxiety, a frantic quest for meaning.

Combining fragments of text, music, images and movement, the young artists unveil the thirst for liberty and the desire to live life fully that is so characteristic of adolescence. A turbulent yet poetic journey.
