You’ll recognize the Andante from Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21, praised by his biographer Maynard Solomon as “an entire movement of unrelieved, time-stopping beauty.” The Baltimore Sun called Jonathan Biss’s performance of the concerto “exquisite… exhilarating… infectious in its high spirits.”
Brahms’s First Symphony concludes the concert on a dramatic note: from the stirring C-minor pulse opening to the brilliance of the C major horn calls in the Allegro, it’s easy to hear why this masterpiece propelled him into the ranks of the greatest symphonic masters.
