  Violin Marjolaine Lambert

  Violinist Marjolaine Lambert, a native of Joliette but self-proclaimed Montrealer, started her music studies at the age of four years old, following the footsteps of her brother, violist Frédéric Lambert. At a young age, her natural talent led her to join the studio of Johanne Arel and Raymond Dessaints at Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, which she graduated from in 2005. With a passion for learning and broadening her general knowledge, she went to McGill University in the class of Denise Lupien. Studying the rudiments of mandarin as a minor, it led her to tour through China as Principal Second violin of the Orchestre de la Francophonie Canadienne.

  Upon completion of her Bachelor’s degree with honour, she went to Yale University for her Master’s degree to study with Ani Kavafian. There, she thrived as the concertmaster of the Yale Philharmonia and winner of the Woolsey Concerto Competition. Establishing strong collaborations with contemporary composers, maestro Julian Wachner and herself created Novus NYC, an orchestra devoted to new music, of which she acted as concertmaster. She had the opportunity to premiere works by David Lang, Bernard Rands and Christopher Theofanidis.

  Her passion for new music led her to pursue a Doctorate of Music at McGill University, with the support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, which focused on the hyper-violin created by Pierre Boulez in his Anthèmes. Her work with live electronics has brought her interesting and different kinds of projects, including the world premiere of Les Gestes, a creation of dance choreographer Isabelle Van Grimde.

  Marjolaine has performed as a soloist under many conductors such as Yuli Turovsky, Peter Oundjian, and Shinik Hahm. As a chambrist, she's been invited to perform often with Les Violons du Roy, I Musici, and Arcos Chamber Orchestra.

  In her rare spare time, Marjolaine enjoys watching an impressive amount of TV shows, discovering the depths of performance practice on her Baroque violin, or rocking out stadiums with Céline Dion.

  She is thrilled to be a member of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, as of September 2016.

  La violoniste Marjolaine Lambert, originaire de Joliette mais autoproclamée Montréalaise, a entamé ses études musicales dès l’âge de quatre ans, suivant les traces de son frère, l’altiste Frédéric Lambert. Toute jeune, son talent naturel l’a menée à joindre les rangs du studio de Johanne Arel et de Raymond Dessaints au Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, auprès duquel elle obtient un diplôme en 2005. En raison de sa soif d’apprendre et d’accroître ses connaissances générales, elle s’inscrit à l’Université McGill dans la classe de Denise Lupien. Sa mineure en mandarin lui a permis de prendre part à une tournée de l’Orchestre de la Francophonie en Chine à titre de second violon solo.

  Une fois son baccalauréat avec spécialisation en main, elle poursuit ses études afin d’obtenir une maîtrise à l’Université Yale, où elle étudiera avec Ani Kavafian. Elle s’y est épanouie en tant que violon solo de l’Orchestre philharmonique de Yale et finaliste du Concours de concertos Woolsey. Marjolaine a tressé de solides collaborations avec des compositeurs contemporains; elle a créé, avec le maestro Julian Wachner, Novus NYC, un orchestre dévoué à la musique nouvelle au sein duquel elle siège à titre de violon solo. Elle a eu l’occasion de créer des œuvres de David Lang, Bernard Rands et Christopher Theofanidis.

  Sa passion pour la nouvelle musique l’a amenée à entreprendre, à l’Université McGill, des études doctorales en musique axées sur le violon électrique créé par Pierre Boulez dans ses Anthèmes, avec le soutien du Conseil de recherche en sciences humaines du Canada. Son travail avec les dispositifs électroniques lui permet de participer à divers projets très intéressants, notamment la création mondiale de l’œuvre Les Gestes, une création de la chorégraphe de danse Isabelle Van Grimde.

  Marjolaine s’est produite en tant que soliste sous la direction de nombreux chefs d’orchestre dont Yuli Turovsky, Peter Oundjian et Shinik Hahm. À titre de chambriste, elle a souvent été invitée à s’exécuter avec Les Violons du Roy, I Musici et l’Arcos Chamber Orchestra.

  Dans son rare temps libre, Marjolaine aime bien dévorer les téléséries, découvrir les profondeurs de la pratique sur son violon baroque ou encore faire lever les foules avec Céline Dion.

  Elle est ravie de faire partie de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts depuis septembre 2016.

  Double Bass Marjolaine Fournier

  Born in Toronto, Marjolaine Fournier was raised in Chicoutimi after her family moved to the Saguenay in 1974. Long standing principal double bass with the Orchestre Symphonique du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, she was a founding member of its Orchestre de Chambre in 1986. A bass student at the Conservatoire de musique de Chicoutimi and Trois-Rivières, she graduated with a Premier Prix in double bass and a Premier Prix in chamber music in 1989.

  In 1991, after having been solo-double bass with the Jeunes Virtuoses of Montreal and the New York Chamber Soloists, she won a position with the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Marjolaine was appointed Assistant Principal Bass with NACO in 1997. In addition to playing in Ottawa, she enjoys teaching double bass at the Conservatoire de musique à Gatineau and is a member of the Kikyo Ensemble. The quartet, composed of friends from the NAC Orchestra, performs works written or arranged for its unusual formation: violin, viola, cello and bass, in a wide diversity of repertoire, combinations and styles.

  On the side, Ms Fournier plays the viola da gamba, the violone, the clarinet and likes to play other styles and musical instruments as a very bad amateur. She also enjoys fishing, running, the outdoors, reading, listening to prog-rock, woodworking, video games, cooking (she finally learned how to make her own pie crust last year!) and is the French NAC Orchestra podcast host of the “BaladOCNA” series which you can find at www.nac-cna.ca/podcasts.

  Marjolaine is a very proud recipient of the National Arts Centre’s “Good Ambassador Award”.

  Née à Toronto, Marjolaine Fournier devient saguenéenne de cœur en 1974 lorsque sa famille s'établit à Chicoutimi. Elle fait ses études au Conservatoire de musique de Chicoutimi et de Trois-Rivières et obtient un Premier Prix en contrebasse ainsi qu’un Premier Prix en musique de chambre en 1989.

  Longtemps contrebasse-solo de l'Orchestre Symphonique du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, elle fait partie des membres fondateurs de l'Orchestre de Chambre du Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean en 1986. En 1991, après avoir été contrebasse-solo des Jeunes Virtuoses de Montréal et des New York Chamber Soloists, elle remporte un poste dans l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts. Elle est, depuis 1997, contrebasse-solo assistante à l'OCNA. Outre son travail à l'Orchestre, Marjolaine Fournier est professeure de contrebasse au Conservatoire de musique du Québec à Gatineau, et elle est membre de l'Ensemble Kikyo. Ce quatuor, formé de collègues de l'Orchestre du CNA, interprète des œuvres composées ou arrangées pour cet ensemble inusité : violon, alto, violoncelle et contrebasse, en visitant une grande variété de compositeurs, combinaisons, et de genres musicaux.

  Pour son plaisir, M^me Fournier joue de la viole de gambe, du violone et de la clarinette, et touche en dilettante de nombreux autres instruments. Elle aime aussi la pêche, la course à pied, le plein air, la lecture, le rock progressif, les jeux vidéo, le travail du bois et la cuisine (elle a finalement appris l’année dernière à faire sa propre croûte à tarte!). Elle anime la série française des balados de l’Orchestre du CNA appelée BaladOCNA, que l’on trouve au site www.nac-cna.ca/balados.

  Marjolaine est très fière d'avoir obtenu le « Prix Bon Ambassadeur » du Centre national des Arts.

  Percussion Kenneth Simpson

  Kenneth Simpson, a native of Ottawa, obtained a Bachelor of Music in Performance from the University of Ottawa in 1985 under the guidance of Ian Bernard, Timpanist of the National Arts Centre Orchestra. Further study continued over a long period with renowned teacher/performer Pierre Beluse of McGill University in Montreal.

  As a student, Mr. Simpson won the prestigious NACO Bursary Award in 1983, as well as the Isobel Firestone Scholarship at the University of Ottawa in 1984.

  Mr. Simpson was engaged as Percussionist of the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Principal Percussion of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and as Professor of Percussion at the University of Ottawa until his retirement in 2021.

  Also very active in chamber music, Kenneth made several appearances on the NAC’s Music for a Sunday Afternoon, the Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, Music and Beyond, and was a member of the Capital Brass Works.

  Through the NAC, Mr. Simpson was very involved with Music in the Schools as part of the Percussion Duo "Bangers and Smash" and as clinician. He currently sits on the Board of Directors for the Kiwanis Music Festival, and is an endorser for Zildjian Cymbals in Boston, Mass.

  Originaire d’Ottawa, Kenneth Simpson a obtenu en 1985 un baccalauréat en musique avec spécialisation en interprétation de l’Université d’Ottawa sous la direction d’Ian Bernard, timbalier de l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts. Il a poursuivi pendant longtemps des études avec le réputé professeur et interprète Pierre Beluse, de l’Université McGill.

  Il a remporté en 1983 le prestigieux prix de la Bourse de l’Orchestre du CNA et, l’année suivante, la bourse Isobel Firestone de l’Université d’Ottawa en 1984.

  M. Simpson était percussionniste à l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts, 1er percussioniste de l’Orchestre symphonique d’Ottawa et professeur de percussion à l’Université d’Ottawa jusqu'à sa retraite en 2021.

  Très actif également en musique de chambre, il s’est produit à plusieurs reprises dans le cadre de la série du CNA Musique pour un dimanche après-midi, du ChamberFest d’Ottawa et du festival Musique et autres mondes; il a également été membre de l’ensemble Capital BrassWorks.

  M. Simpson était très engagé dans le programme Musiciens dans les écoles du CNA, comme membre du duo de percussion Bangers and Smash et comme instructeur. Présentement, il fait parti du conseil d'administration du Kiwanis Music Festival d'Ottawa, et il assure de son appui le groupe Zildjian Cymbals de Boston, au Massachusetts.

  Percussion Andrew Harris

  

  Percussion Andrew Harris

  Canadian percussionist and educator Andrew Harris is based in Ottawa where he enjoys performing with many of the finest ensembles in the region. Andrew is Principal Timpani & Percussion with the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra and has performed regularly with the National Arts Centre Orchestra and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. He has performed with ensembles including Ottawa Choral Society, Thirteen Strings Chamber Orchestra, Touring Broadway Productions, and the Central Band of the Canadian Armed Forces. Andrew has been the recipient of several prestigious awards including the Harold Crabtree Award (NAC Orchestra Bursary), the SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier Canada Graduate Scholarship, and the Marusia Yaworska Scholarship. 

  As a chamber musician Andrew has performed with ensembles such as the Bel Canto Wind Quintet, Capital BrassWorks, and numerous percussion ensembles. He has appeared regularly in festivals including Music and Beyond and Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. 

  Also an avid educator, Andrew enjoys instructing both privately and in group settings. He is Coordinator of the Percussion Sector at the University of Ottawa where he gives lessons and directs the percussion ensemble. He has been the percussion coach for the Ottawa Youth and Junior Youth Orchestras and frequently runs high school masterclasses and coaching sessions. 

  Andrew is a proud artist/endorser of Remo drumheads and Zildjian cymbals. He co-founded and continues to run the percussion-focused instrument rental company Percussion Warehouse.  

  Andrew obtained both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees summa cum laude from the University of Ottawa and was a two-time member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada. Outside of percussion, Andrew enjoys running, playing drum set, and spending time with his wife Victoria and their two daughters. 

  Établi dans la capitale canadienne, Andrew Harris a obtenu son baccalauréat et sa maîtrise avec grande distinction de l’Université d’Ottawa. Percussionniste solo pour l’Orchestre symphonique d’Ottawa, il se joint régulièrement à l’Orchestre du Centre national des Arts et à l’Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. Son talent lui a valu plusieurs distinctions, notamment le prix de la Fondation Harold Crabtree (bourse de l’Orchestre du CNA), la bourse d’études supérieures du Canada Joseph-Armand-Bombardier et la Bourse internationale en musique Marusia-Yaworska.

  Celui qui a été deux fois membre de l’Orchestre national des jeunes du Canada joue également au sein de la Société chorale d’Ottawa, de l’orchestre de chambre Thirteen Strings, de la Musique centrale des Forces canadiennes ainsi que pour des productions itinérantes de Broadway.

  En tant que musicien de chambre, il collabore aussi avec diverses formations, dont le quintette à vent Bel Canto, le groupe Capital BrassWorks et de nombreux ensembles de percussionnistes. On l'a entendu à différentes occasions au festival Musique et Autres mondes et au Festival international de musique de chambre d’Ottawa, entre autres événements.

  Ce formateur passionné, qui aime autant l’enseignement individuel que de groupe, fait partie du corps professoral de la Faculté de musique, où il donne des cours pratiques et théoriques, en plus de diriger l’ensemble de percussions. Ancien chef de section des Juniors de l’Orchestre des jeunes d’Ottawa, il offre fréquemment des classes de maître et des séances de mentorat dans des écoles secondaires.

  Cofondateur de l’entreprise de location d’instruments Percussion Warehouse, Andrew Harris affectionne particulièrement les membranes Remo et les cymbales Zildjian.
