Trumpeter Enrico Rava, sometimes called “the grand master of Italian jazz,” began playing Dixieland trombone in the 1950s before hearing Miles Davis and feeling inspired to switch sounds and instruments. Since that time he has recorded more than 100 albums. In the early 1960s, he recorded movie soundtracks with Argentinian saxophonist Gato Barbieri, and played with Chet Baker. In 1967, he moved to New York, where he worked with a variety of free jazz’s leading names, including drummer Rashied Ali, pianist Cecil Taylor, and bassist Charlie Haden. Not content to rest on past successes, he has spent recent years collaborating with younger talent. Italian trombonist Gianluca Petrella is one of those who have appeared as members of his quintet. Petrella joined Rava’s band in 1997 and has played with him since, even as his own star began to rise independently with his band Indigo4’s 2006 Blue Note debut. Since, Petrella has become known on his own for mingling electronica and avant-garde sounds with traditional jazz.
