From his debut with seminal jazz-rock fusion group Return To Forever at age 20, Philadelphia native Stanley Clarke was a pioneer in defining the sound of contemporary electric bass. Now, at 63, he is an undisputed master of the instrument, with a broad body of work that includes more than 40 recordings as a leader and collaborations with artists as diverse as Jack DeJohnette and Keith Richards. A four-time Grammy Award winner, Clarke has also written extensively for film and television, and produced recordings by artists who include Natalie Cole, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Roy Ayers. His latest solo recording, 2014’s UP (Mack Avenue) showcases Clarke on both electric and double basses, and features a who’s who of musical friends, including guitarists Joe Walsh and Jimmy Herring, keyboardists Chick Corea and Greg Phillinganes, and Michael Jackson’s long-time studio rhythm section. An energetic and engaging live performer, Clarke is at the very top of his game.
