Israeli trombonist Avi Lebovich is a master sideman, having supporting a dazzling array of huge names including Bootsy Collins, Chick Corea, Milt Jackson, and Roy Hargrove during the many years he lived in New York City. He also spent two years in the ‘90s as part of British acid-jazz band Incognito, with whom he toured and recorded. But in 2003 he returned to his home country to form the Avi Lebovich Orchestra—a contemporary reincarnation of the traditional big band. Recruiting strong players from the Israeli scene, Lebovich set out to form a group that would best represent the present state of that country’s jazz sound. But true to his roots, Lebovich’s orchestra calls up the rock and funk of his sideman years as part of their modern Israeli jazz, making it a big band sound in tune with the present day.
