Classically trained with orchestral experience, he is equally at ease playing in funk-pop groups and recording with hip-hop vocalists. Beginning at the age of 14, he was composing for piano and symphony orchestra, and by 17 he was playing with a popular local funk band. Subsequently he studied both jazz and classical piano at Leuven’s Lemmensinstituut. Two years later, he moved to London to become the resident pianist for the Contemporary Dance Company, and in 2003 returned to Belgium to form the Jef Neve Trio. The band’s acclaimed and popular CDs straddle a line between the creativity of jazz and the propulsion of rock without settling into any middle-of-the-road compromise between the two
