The haunting interplay between Norwegian singer Sidsel Endresen and guitarist Stian Westerhus, both composers, is a challenge to the very idea of genre. The music they make has the freedom and improvisation of jazz, the tenderness and melody of European folk, the rawness of rock, and the unpredictable edginess of the avant-garde. Whatever their music might be called, it is both arresting and fascinating. Between 1980 and 1987, Endresen worked with the Jon Eberson Group to significant critical acclaim and popularity in Norway. Westerhus, born in 1979, holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Jazz and released four albums with the experimental group Puma. Though they have been collaborating together for less than five years, Endresen and Westerhus create a sonic landscape particular to both their relationship as performers and their extensive musical experience.
