Polish saxophonist and composer Maciej Obara first made a name for himself by winning the 2006 Bielska Zadymka Jazz Contest for up-and-coming jazz groups in a country with a thrilling and thriving scene of past and present jazz. That win sent Obara on tour—first across Poland and then to the study at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. In 2011, he was nominated for the Fryderyk Jazz Musician of the Year Award (essentially the Polish Grammy). By that time Obara was in demand across Europe, playing with musicians from a variety of different backgrounds, and was chosen to participate in Take Five: Europe, a professional development program for some of the best names in European jazz. It is no surprise, then, that the Obara International Quartet is a partnership of Polish and Norwegian musicians battle-hardened through their experience playing across the European continent and around the world.
