Vibraphonist and percussionist Pascal Schumacher began pushing musical boundaries early, co-forming his first ensemble in 1995 when he was only 16 years old. Since that time he has plunged ever more deeply into improvisational music with both passion and scholarship. But as a performer, Schumacher is not bookish or scholarly—instead, he is known for passionate and thrilling approaches to his instrument that draw the audience into the experience of his ongoing invention. His Pascal Schumacher Quartet brings to improvised jazz strong flavours of pop melodicism. Moving outside even music for inspiration, his work as a composer has drawn on dance, theatre, and film, though he has also been increasingly fascinated by the challenge of bringing together contemporary jazz with traditions in classical chamber music. In particular, Schumacher “decomposed and recomposed” Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3—showing how ready he is to engage vivaciously with the complete artistic canon of the past and present.
