Extraordinarily creative, percussionist/composer Jesse Stewart has enlivened Ottawa’s music community since joining the faculty of Carleton University in 2008 and relocating from his hometown of Guelph. A master of utilizing found sounds and employing extended techniques, Stewart has collaborated with a wide range of global musicians, including Evan Parker, George Lewis, Roswell Rudd, Hamid Drake, and Pauline Oliveros. As a member of Stretch Orchestra – a trio, whose others members are Matt Brubeck and Kevin Breit – Stewart won a 2012 Juno Award for Instrumental Album of the Year. As a composer, he has been commissioned for works around the world. Also a visual artist, Stewart is an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa and has exhibited work in more than a dozen solo and group shows. His academic research extends to the links between improvised music and community building, and in 2013 he received Carleton University’s Marston LaFrance Research Fellowship.
