The blending of jazz flavours comes naturally to French chanteuse Cyrille Aimée, whose Dominican mother and French father played a wide array of records at home and took her to a local Django Reinhardt festival every year. The atmosphere of gypsy culture she found there inspired her to sing on street corners before taking to the stage—where she quickly made a name for herself. Following a move to New York to study at SUNY Purchase, she won the 2007 Montreux Jazz Vocal Competition, reached the finals of the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocals Competition, and won the first Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition in 2012. Aimée mingles her early passion for gypsy swing with Latin sounds—bossa nova in particular—with a playful subtlety that critics have consistently praised. In addition to work with her own Surreal Band, she has released albums with a variety of other artists.
