STRAVINSKY Fireworks
DAUGHERTY Fire and Blood, Concerto for Violin
Alexandre Da Costa, Violin
MUSSORGSKY Night on Bare Mountain
STRAVINSKY Firebird Suite (1919)
We start with a bang with Igor Stravinsky’s Fireworks. This early piece captured the attention of Sergei Diaghilev, founder of the Ballet Russes, who then commissioned Stravinsky to write his first ballet score, The Firebird. Fireworks are best seen in the night sky, and Mussorgsky’s piece Night on Bare Mountain provides just that. We perform it in the original orchestration rather than the more popular revision by Rimsky-Korsakov. Our opening program is completed with Michael Daugherty’s violin concerto Fire and Blood, featuring soloist Alexandre Da Costa.
