Les Chiens de Navarre

France

First there’s the company’s name, as vivid as it is enigmatic: a pack of wild and crazy artists from France? That’s one interpretation, but Meurisse prefers to think of it as a Dadaist expression whose meaning is completely open. Then there are the perplexing show titles—for instance, L’autruche peut mourir d’une crise cardiaque en entendant le bruit d’une tondeuse à gazon qui se met en marche (“An ostrich can die of a heart attack on hearing the sound of a lawn mower starting up”). Originality is their trademark, but it’s never gratuitous; rather, it reflects the shared vision of the company members, who come from a wide range of backgrounds: to reinvest humour with its critical and cathartic power.
