The Violent Beauty of Botis Seva’s BLKDOG
The British choreographer's work is hallucinatory and nightmarish yet abstract enough to be palatable.
BLKDOG
“Vital and gripping, BLKDOG is Botis Seva’s Olivier Award winning Hip-Hop dance theatre production.” Far From The Norm
Trigger/content warnings: Abstract depiction of depression, of sexualized and physical violence; loud music and haze.
BLKDOG, a poignant hip hop dance theatre production, encourages us to be tamers of our memories and our personal and collective trauma in an ultimate quest for acceptance and peace. Both of-the-moment and timeless, the work transcends cultural barriers to inspire universal dialogue.
BLKDOG is the first hip hop show ever to win the prestigious Olivier Award. Its resonance with audiences of different backgrounds is a testament to its exceptional artistry and universally relevant themes.
Far From The Norm's Artistic Director Botis Seva brings together artists with a range of dance styles to create a variety of movement language that unites Popping, Breaking, Krump and House. The company creates work that empowers marginalized people while inspiring audiences around the world.
BLACK OUT NIGHTS
On October 24,2024, NAC Dance will host a Black Out Night that will coincide with the evening performance of BLKDOG. A post show reception will held in the Peter Herrndorf Place with music, food and arts installation by Olivia Onuk of InBloom Art As Therapy. All audience members are invited to immerse themselves in interactive, self-guided art installations designed to help them reflect on their BLKDOG experience. Engage with "Fleeting Emotions," where they can leave and watch their emotional imprint fade on heat-sensitive fabric, or explore "Shadows of Self," a light and shadow installation that invites introspection through movement and reflection.
NAC Black Out Nights offer Black audiences, and their guests, an opportunity to enjoy performances with their community, showcasing the vibrant spectrum of the Black experience. As always, everyone is welcome to join the Black Out Night during the BLKDOG performance, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and celebration.
